OIKOS Devotionals | Tough Love | Romans 13:8-14

Day 1: Understanding Your Oikos

Devotional: The concept of 'Oikos' is central to our mission of evangelism. 'Oikos' refers to our extended household—our network of relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. These are the people God has placed in our lives for a reason. Biblical examples show that evangelism often starts at home. Think about the people in your life who don't know Christ. These are the individuals God is calling you to reach out to. Start by creating an Oikos list of 8-15 people who don't know Christ and commit to praying for them daily. This is the first step in changing your world.

Verse: For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. - Romans 10:13

Question: Who are the people in your Oikos, and how can you start investing in their spiritual future today?

Quote: Evangelism is each one of us taking time to list down the people that we love in our life who are not believers or maybe who aren't walking with the Lord. And we pray for them daily and we invest in those relationships.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see the people in my life through Your eyes. Give me the courage and wisdom to reach out to them with Your love. Amen.

Day 2: The Urgency of Our Mission

Devotional: Romans 13:11-14 reminds us of the urgency of our mission. Salvation is a limited time offer, and we must act now. Either someone's going to die outside of Christ, or Christ is going to come back and start His reign. This urgency should drive us to invest in our relationships and share the gospel with passion. Time is short, and the stakes are high. Let's not waste any more time.

Verse: And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. - Romans 13:11

Question: How does understanding the urgency of our mission change the way you approach evangelism?

Quote: Salvation is a limited time offer. Either someone's going to die outside of Christ, or Christ is going to come back and split the world open and start his reign.

Prayer: Lord, awaken my heart to the urgency of sharing Your gospel. Help me to act with passion and purpose. Amen.

Day 3: Love as a Debt

Devotional: Love is the one debt that you are never paid in full on. We are called to love others continually, even those who are difficult to love. This love fulfills the law and reflects Christ's love for us. Jesus did not owe us anything, yet He gave us everything. Our obligation is to the people in our life who don't know Christ yet. By loving them, we show them a glimpse of God's love.

Verse: Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. - Romans 13:8

Question: Who in your life is difficult to love, and how can you show them Christ's love today?

Quote: Love is the one debt that you are never paid in full on.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to love others as You have loved me. Help me to see past their flaws and love them with Your unconditional love. Amen.

Day 4: Living Distinctly Different

Devotional: To change your world, we must think differently and live distinctly different from the world. Refusal to go along with the crowd enhances your ability to have influence within the crowd. When we align our thoughts with the Holy Spirit, we can enhance our witness and draw others to Christ. Our distinctiveness is not about being better than others but about reflecting Christ's love and truth in a world that desperately needs it.

Verse: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. - Romans 12:2

Question: In what ways can you live distinctly different from the world to enhance your witness for Christ?

Quote: Refusal to go along with the crowd enhances your ability to have influence within the crowd.

Prayer: Lord, transform my mind and heart. Help me to live in a way that reflects Your love and truth. Amen.

Day 5: Unity in Mission

Devotional: Wouldn't it be awesome if everyone who calls Jesus their savior and First Baptist their home, to just pull on the same rope, have the same synergy? God loves the people on your Oikos list more than you do. Be faithful in praying for them and investing in their spiritual future. Together, we can change our world by sharing the love of Christ and living out our faith with unity and purpose.

Verse: I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people. - 1 Timothy 2:1

Question: How can you contribute to the unity and mission of your church in reaching out to your Oikos?

Quote: Wouldn't it be awesome if everyone who calls Jesus their savior and First Baptist their home, to just pull on the same rope, have the same synergy?

Prayer: Lord, unite us in our mission to share Your love. Help us to work together with synergy and purpose. Amen.
