The Coming of Christ | The Coming of Hope (A Christmas Sermon Summary) | Hebrews 10:19-25

Introduction

As we enter the Christmas season, it's a time filled with hope, joy, and anticipation. This sermon, part of the "Behold the Savior Comes" series, focuses on the coming of hope through Jesus Christ. Let's explore how we can reorient our hearts towards a hope that never fails, especially during this festive season.

What Do We Put Our Hope In?

False Hopes and Idols

Often, we place our hope in things that are not designed to hold the weight of our expectations. Whether it's relationships, jobs, or material possessions, these things can fail us. John Calvin aptly described the human heart as an "idol factory," constantly creating things to put our hope in. Tim Keller, in his book "Counterfeit Gods," defines an idol as anything more important to you than God. This Christmas, let's recognize and turn away from these false hopes.

The True Source of Hope

Romans 5:5 reminds us that hope in God does not put us to shame because His love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Unlike the fleeting and unreliable hopes of this world, hope in Jesus Christ is steadfast and secure.

The Confidence in Jesus' Blood

A New and Living Way

Hebrews 10:19-21 speaks of the confidence we have to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. This new and living way, opened through His flesh, gives us direct access to God. Unlike the old sacrificial system, which could never fully atone for sins, Jesus' sacrifice is once for all.

Perfect and Pure in Christ

Through Jesus, we are made pure. Hebrews 10:22 encourages us to draw near to God with a true heart and full assurance of faith. Our hearts are sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and our bodies are washed with pure water. This purity is not something we can achieve on our own; it is a gift from God through the blood of Jesus.

Holding Fast to Our Hope

Unwavering Faith

Hebrews 10:23 urges us to hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. This steadfastness is not about never experiencing doubt or struggle but about continually returning to the hope we have in Christ.

Encouragement and Community

Verses 24-25 highlight the importance of community in maintaining our hope. We are called to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together but encouraging one another. This mutual encouragement is vital, especially as we see the day of Christ's return approaching.

Life Application

Living Out Our Hope

Our hope in Jesus is meant to be lived out in community with God's people. This Christmas season, let's focus on encouraging one another and holding fast to the hope we have in Christ.

Questions for Reflection

1. What are the false hopes or idols in your life that you need to turn away from?

2. How can you reorient your heart towards the true hope found in Jesus?

3. Who in your community can you encourage and spur on towards love and good works this week?

A Challenge for the Week

This week, take time to reflect on where you are placing your hope. Make a conscious effort to turn away from false hopes and idols, and instead, focus on the steadfast hope found in Jesus Christ. Reach out to someone in your community to offer encouragement and support, helping them to hold fast to their hope in Christ as well.

Conclusion

As we celebrate the coming of our Savior this Christmas, let's remember that our true hope is found in Jesus. He is the firm foundation that will never fail us. May we live out this hope in our daily lives, encouraging one another and holding fast to the promises of God.
